Obituary for Albert Johann Matthews

Albert passed away on Thursday the 17th of September at Grace Hospital in Winnipeg. He was the son of Sumarlidi and Gudny Matthews. Predeceased by his 3 sisters Grace, Lily and Elin. His sisters provided Al with many beloved nieces and nephews.

He is survived by children Dawn E. Browning of Michigan and Ian J. Matthews of Vancouver, B.C, and their mother Margaret Gail Matthews (nee Brooking) of Chemainus B.C. As well, his daughter Dawn had three children and five great-grandchildren. He also leaves to mourn his close friends Margaret Abrassart and George V. Wright, who have been very helpful to family during this difficult time.

Al joined the R.C.M.P. November 27, 1952 and has many buddies from Northern Canada, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. After retiring May 3, 1980, he worked in the office of The Public Trustee in Winnipeg. He was also a Shriner and a Mason.

He was into sports and did well in school, winning many awards at Daniel McIntyre Collegiate. He loved golfing, fishing and playing the guitar for many a sing song. He was also into curling and swimming, which he taught to other members at the Depot Division in Regina. Al was cheerful and kind to others. He liked jokes and planning them and was a good sport. His infectious smile and loving heart will always be remembered.

Al spent the last few years happily at Thorvaldson Care Home, Winnipeg’s Icelandic run care facility.
The family would like to thank the owners and staff for the excellent care and love he received.

Neil Bardal Funeral Centre is in charge of cremation and he will be interred at the Regina Depot. We would like to thank them for their kindness and help as well as the staff at Grace Hospital.

It was his wish to keep his interment “bare bones” simple and anyone who keeps a big sun in their heart will perhaps know him a little better.
