Obituary for Alexander Samuel Tretiak

My life has been a journey of adventures, tragedies and trumps that began in Winnipeg on January 26, 1939 and ended on February 9, 2021 due to complications from Parkinson’s Disease and Cancer. I am survived by my wife, Stephanie Wood, sisters Irene Willison and her son Greg, Judy Johnson and her husband Dennis, their children Brian and Sharon and Trish Casey.

Alex was predeceased by his father Fred Tretiak, his mother Mary Kaminski and his beloved wife Marjorie McKay in 1996 at age 54.

Alex and Stephanie moved to Gimli to enjoy retirement beside Lake Winnipeg when they married. Retirement saw Alex continue volunteering in the schools in Gimli, giving services in Arborg and Gimli at the Unitarian Churches and embarking on a new career of writing articles on his travels and science. During their marriage, Alex and Marjorie travelled the world from the Canadian Arctic, Africa but their best memories were their years and special friends on the Queen Charlotte Islands (Haida Gwaii).
Alex and Stephanie enjoyed their life in Gimli until failing health necessitated a move to the city for medical attention closer to family.

As per Alex’s wishes cremation has taken place with his ashes placed in a container made by Alex from red and yellow cedar from Haida Gwaii. A private service will take place at a later date.

To all of the special people in Alex’s life, he wanted you to know you were very special to him. His final message to us all is to not grieve for him. Move on and enjoy a good and caring life with loved ones. Make the most of each day as dawn beckons you forward.
