Obituary for Anita Arlene Estelle Stelzer

ANITA ARLENE ESTELLE STELZER

Anita passed away on April 24, 2020 at the age of 87. She was predeceased by her parents Jacob and Olga Pappel, 2 brothers who both died in infancy, her sister Joyce Pappel, and her husband Engelhardt “Sonny” Stelzer. She is survived by her aunt, Laura Jahnke (nee Mazinke) in Manitoba, and cousins Bette Rempel (nee Recksiedler) in Ontario, Larry Recksiedler (Sandy) in Florida, Delaine Colley (Andy), Allan Jahnke, Dianne Klassen (Wayne), Loren Jahnke, all in Manitoba.

Anita and Sonny owned a German restaurant in Winnipeg, The Happy Vineyard. Their lives centered around “The Vineyard” and family members have memories of good German food, a beautiful environment and a musician who played the accordian and sang to diners as he walked around the dining areas. They travelled to Europe many times, and after they retired from restaurant life they travelled in their camper truck all across North America.

They loved dogs and they had several dogs over the years, always named either Chips or Rascal. When Anita was in care at Deer Lodge Centre she loved visits from therapy dogs Maggie and Odin. While there, she diligently exercised by walking the stairs a number of times every day, for as long as she was able.

Anita suffered from dementia and in her last years did not always remember people and events. Staff at Deer Lodge heard her singing hymns in her room. She used to sing a lot when she was young.

Many thanks to the staff at Deer Lodge Centre for their care and to the Office of the Public Guardian and Trustee of Manitoba for overseeing her affairs. Thanks also to those who visited her regularly and helped her as they were able, especially Howard, Marge, and her pastor, Richard Beinert from St. James Lutheran Church.
