Obituary for Anna (Anita) Burik

ANNA (ANITA) BURIK (nee Padoba)
born Aug 28, 1922 – died January 25, 2022 (age 99)

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother. Anita passed peacefully on January 25, 2022 after having contracted the Covid virus. We give thanks to all the staff at St. Boniface Hospital in her last days for their compassionate care and support.
Anita was predeceased by her husband of 57 yrs., John; daughter Karen and all her siblings: Jessie, Minnie, Paul, Peter, and Sophie . Survived by sons Richard (Joy) and Terry (Vali); 8 Grandchildren and 5 Great Grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Also left to mourn are her two sisters-in-law Helen and Josephine.
Anita was cared for and loved by her caregivers at St. Joseph Residence where she spent the last 7 years of her life. Staff will forever remember her singing the words “Yes Jesus loves me, yes I know because the Bible tells me so”. No matter what care she received she always responded with “God bless you”.
Anita was born to Polish and Ukrainian immigrants Michael and Anne Padoba. She attended the Red School (Krawchyk School) in Brooklands. At a young age her mother passed and her sisters Jessie, Minnie and Sophie cared for her at their Brooklands home on Ross Ave. They had the responsibility of herding the cattle to and from the pasture in the area now known as Red River College (St. James area). All the families were very close to one another and many became lifelong friends and soulmates. All were very supportive of each other in their lifetimes. As in many small towns the community hall was the center of all social functions. The William Hall and the Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League was where most gatherings took place. She met her husband John Burik at “The Patterson’s Barn Dance, AKA the Red Barn Dance Hall, corner of Keewatin and Logan. They married in June 21, 1947. Many a returning soldier met their future wives there. Prior to her marriage Anita had a number of jobs including, housekeeping, and working in traditional male jobs during the Second World War: Burshmen Saw & Sheer, Christies Biscuits & Winnipeg Cold Storage. Her longest job for 30 years was working for The Bay at the Paddlewheel Restaurant, then the Georgian Room. Here she met many lifelong friends. Even in her last years with Dementia once she was told of The Bay closing she shed a tear. Anita and John raised three children; Richard, Karen and Terry in the West Kildonan area. She was an amazing cook and took pride in cooking up great ethnic dishes for all occasions and Sunday dinners. She loved to entertain her family and friends anytime someone would come over. Many social events and celebrations were held and she enjoyed being with all her friends and families. She regularly attended the Holy Ghost Ukrainian Catholic Church, St. Joseph Ukrainian Catholic Church and St. Nicholas Church in Winnipeg. Anita loved travelling, camping, and of course shopping with her friends and family.
After 57 years of marriage her husband John passed in 2004. Her daughter Karen then passed in 2008 which was very hard for her during the years that followed.

Anita will be remembered for her huge heart, kindness and generosity to all she came across. We will all miss you dearly mom, (BaBa). You made this world a brighter and better place with you in it. May you Rest in peace.

The family give thanks to St Joseph’s Residence staff and St Boniface Hospital for their exceptional care.
