Obituary for Clifford Herby Lau

Clifford Herby Lau

Clifford 'Herb' Lau was born on September 9, 1934, in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He was the youngest child of Matilda Lau (nee Hoehn) and Adolph Lau. Herb is predeceased by both parents, his brother Harold Ralph Law and his sister Gertrude (Gertie) Margaret Bligh (nee Law). He was the last surviving member of that generation and will be missed by his nieces and nephews.

Herb began his working career with United Grain Growers in 1951. He spent time employed with the City of Winnipeg, Interprovincial Co-op, Canada Post and finished his career by working with the Government of Manitoba for 24 years, retiring in 1997.

In the early years, Herbie was doted upon and protected by his sister Gertie. This strong relationship was maintained throughout their lives, even after it became impossible to physically visit any further. After his father's passing in 1963 and his brother's passing in 1981, Herb ensured his mother wanted for nothing until her passing in 1985. Both he and his mother were steadfast in their opinions which made some of the interactions lively and humorous to those who knew and loved them both.

Herb remained single most of his life. His independent spirit was tested in the final couple of years as he was forced to accept care. His niece, Linda stepped into this role without hesitation and visited him often during this time. Herb quietly passed on January 17, 2023.

Herb will be missed by his niece Linda Muderewich (nee Bligh) and her husband Randy, Russell Bligh, Roderick Bligh and his wife Candace, and Gordon Bligh and his wife Patricia. Sharon Bligh, his oldest niece, had predeceased her Uncle Herb along with her husband Barry Fuchs.

Herb Lau was cremated. He asked that no marker be erected in his memory and no funeral ceremony be held, but he will live on in our hearts.

Uncle Herby, you are loved, and you are missed.
