Obituary for Edna Maude Tustin

Edna M. Tustin (nee Barrand)
1920-2022

Our beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt and friend Edna Tustin, passed away April 22, 2022 at Concordia Place at the age of 101 years. In the midst of our profound sorrow, we are grateful for her long and wonderful life. We will struggle to fill the void her passing has created.
She was born October 4th, 1920 in a converted stable on Fleet Street in Winnipeg. Raised in Ft. Rouge and attended Earl Grey and Kelvin High School. She attended the Winnipeg School of Art. It was here she met her future husband Walter Mansfield Tustin and on June 26th, 1943 they were married.
She worked at Brigdens and Phillips Gutkin as an animator and on the death of her husband Walter in December of 1960 worked for the Manitoba Telephone System until retirement. Edna was an excellent student. Writing always came effortlessly and she was meticulous about spelling and grammar.
Her interests were mainly art. Her joy was painting water colours. She enjoyed many crafts and hobbies sewing, pottery, knitting, gardening and growing orchids to name a few. She was a member of the Local Colour Art Group, the Manitoba Orchid Society, volunteered at Seven Oaks Hospital and Middlechurch Home.

Widowed at age 40 with 3 children ages 7-11-14 to raise she worked hard at being a parent and with a lot of love raised two kind, honest and caring sons and a daughter with the same qualities.
Her life was a testimony of faith in herself. She had a sharp wit and seldom filtered her words. She taught her children to be compassionate independent people so they could teach their children the same.
She got to watch her children raise their children and her grandchildren do the same. She was a pillar of strength and loved her family with every fibre of her being. She had a tenaciousness that was unmatched. She was much more than a family matriarch, more than the glue, she made our family work. Her family was precious and dear to her.

The grandchildren always thought their grandmother was a little bit crazy. They would make certain of it with all the wild things they got her to do and she did not mind the gut splitting laughter at her expense. When they went too far, she would let them have it until the next time she had a chance to be goofy with her grandchildren.

With few exceptions summer vacations were spent at Lake Winnipeg. First in Gimli and then in Sandy Hook at the cottage she and Walter purchased and still had. There are memories for four generations to reminisce over.
She was blessed with many wonderful friends. There is gratitude for their loyalty, caring, acceptance and respect. Each one held a special place in her heart.

The best things in life are kept simple and such was her love. Cherish those special memories to which she belongs.

Left to mourn are her three children, Barry and wife Debbie, Paul and wife Brenda, Arlene Hess and husband Peter. Eight wonderful grandchildren Paul (Jacquie), Craig (Francoise Cassidy), Lisa Litke (Derek), Kyle (Julie Bueckert), Shawna (Chris Cumming), Ryan (Margeaux), Erin Shelby (Steven), and Bradley Hess (Kelsey). Eleven wonderful great-grandchildren Brett, Kate, Keaton, Kaylee, Ethan, Cameron, Emily, Abby, Patrick, Evan, and June also many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents Ethel (Brown) and Herbert Barrand, husband Walter Mansfield Tustin, brother John, sister in law Noreen.

A special thank you to the 2nd floor staff at Concordia place for their outstanding compassion, kindness, care and friendship during her time there. Also, to Dr. Peter Bialy for his wonderful care over the years.

A memorial service will take place at 10:00 am on Thursday May 5th, 2022 at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre 3030 Notre Dame Avenue (across from Brookside Cemetery)
