Obituary for Elva Jean Down

Elva Jean Down (Craik)

Jean Down passed away, surrounded by family, on December 8, 2023 at the Misericordia Health Centre.

Jean was born to Ira and Cordie Craik on July 17, 1924 and grew up in Greenway, Manitoba with her brothers Russell and Donald. Jean attended the University of Manitoba and graduated from the faculty of pharmacy in 1948. She was one of only five women in her graduating class. Jean met her future husband Art while
apprenticing in Winnipeg. Jean and Art were the proprietors of Down’s Pharmacy for the first several years of their marriage. After they sold the store Jean worked at a variety of pharmacies always striving to work hours that would allow her to be home for her family as much as possible.

Jean remained active in retirement. She attended aquacise classes at the Margaret Grant Pool and completed them on her own in the summer months well into her nineties. Jean was a dedicated volunteer at Fort Whyte Alive and considered it her “church”. She particularly loved serving as an interpretive guide for school groups.

Jean is survived by her son Murray, daughter Sharon Wolchuk (Brian), sister-in-law Shirley Duckworth and several nieces and nephews. Sincere thanks are extended to Stefan at Tiffiany Towers, “TT” of WRHA Homecare and the staff at Cornish 5 at the Misericordia Health Centre.

Heartfelt thanks are also extended to “Team Jean” for their loving support during the last weeks of Jean’s life.

Mom we are so lucky to have had you as our mom. You were absolutely the best.

We love you up to the sky and back down again and we are going to keep you forever.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
