Obituary for George Jaroslaw Maneluk

May 13, 1947-April 4, 2021

When we were growing up, you were our hero. We admired your strength and intelligence; you rarely answered a Jeopardy question wrong! You were a fixer of everything; a builder of anything and most importantly, you were a mother and father all in one. You instilled the importance of family and love in your children, which we try to emulate today, but you set the bar so high! Raising three children, George Jr, Kristen and Mike, wasn’t easy. You spent most of those days driving to all our sporting events. No matter what obstacles life has thrown our way, you’ve always been our Number One Fan!

Dad was a teacher, and a great one at that. Everywhere we went, students past and present, would approach us to say that he was their favorite. Dad taught many years, beginning his career right out of university at Knowles Centre, spending over 30 years in the Transcona Springfield School Division before finishing his incredible tenure in the Sunrise School Division.

Dad made many lifelong friends along the way. Some of his favorite times were spent at the cabin in the Whiteshell with “his crew”. He loved his “Guys Weekends”, filled with fishing, golfing, getting up to no good and endless debauchery – What happens at Dorothy Lake, stays at Dorothy Lake. For those who joined along, you shall remain nameless, you know who you are. If you’re reading this and have a smile on your face, you participated.

Dad also had a passion for travel, from the East Coast of Canada, to trips to Europe, to sunning on a beach in Cuba with a Corona in hand. He was so proud of the time he was able to use his Ukrainian ways to bamboozle one of many trips there for free!

Dad spent the last few years in Gimli fixing up his new place. He enjoyed the peacefulness & serenity it brought to his now laidback life, making new friends & feeding any animal that came by. He enjoyed bird watching & spending time sitting on the deck under his favorite umbrella. He was the self-declared “Mayor” of anywhere he called home.

Our Dad was Human, incredibly headstrong, firm but fair and never apologetic for the way he lived his life and the mistakes made along the way. Being loved by this man gave you the sense of being invincible and for that we are forever grateful. He guided his family with love. His heart was as big as his fishing stories & his golf slice.

Dad will be sadly missed by his children, daughters in law Lena and Devan, and his grandchildren, Marcus (MacKenzie), Meghan (Andrew), Myah, Lee, Ava and Raeleen. Dad will be deeply missed by Marijka, his Angel on Earth. Thank you Marijka for loving him unconditionally & being by his side until the very end.
Predeceased by his mother Stephanie and father Michaylo, he will be joining them in rest, back in his mother’s arm, at All Saints Cemetery on Main Street.

We would like to send a special thank you to the countless paramedics, nurses and doctors in Gimli, Selkirk and HSC GA4 for all the care they gave to Dad in the last few months.

Due to COVID restrictions a private ceremony with immediate family will be held.

In lieu of flowers or donations, please raise your glass on May 13, 2021, what would have been his 74th birthday, to toast our Father, Gigi, Friend, an incredible man, George.

Until we meet again.

I had the pleasure of knowing your dad at TCI through my high school years and any visit after that. He always had a smile and was a great teacher. Awesome obituary to see a small piece of a wonderful man he was.

Deepest sympathies to the Maneluk family. George was my best friend, my fishing and golfing buddy, my teammate. We were friends from 1960 when we first met on the football field at Sisler.. He was a great father to George Jr., Mike and Kristen. Great fathers make great grandfathers.. He will be missed forever by the Kozak family.
