Obituary for Helve Dawson

1924 - 2021

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Helve Dawson, aged 96 years, on February 16,2021, at the Grace Hospital in Winnipeg.

Helve was predeceased by her parents Dorothea and Robert Hacker; her beloved husband John (Jack) Dawson; stepson Randy Dawson; step great-grandson Zachary Dawson; her sister Edith (William) Peterson; in-laws William (Helen) Dawson, Victor (Vi) Dawson, Geordie (Helen) Dawson, May (Lloyd) Huston and Joe (Merle) Dawson.

She is survived by her son Steve (Marion) Kiefer; granddaughters Jennifer Hart and Shannon (Kris) Starling, and great-granddaughters Sydney, Bella and Kenzie Starling. Also surviving are grandchildren Sean (Dawn) Dawson and Kelly (Leonardo) Sexon and their mother Linda Dawson; great-grandchildren Kaitlyn and Xander Dawson and Kaleigh Sexon. Helve also leaves to mourn numerous cousins, nieces and nephews and their families in Canada, U.S.A., Germany and Ireland.

Helve was born December 23, 1924 in Hamburg, Germany. At 15 years old, Helve and her family fled Nazi Germany, arrived in Saskatchewan, Canada, and two years later settled in Winnipeg, MB. She spent twenty-six years in service with the C.N.R., retiring in 1984 to marry her beloved Jack and they spent twenty-seven years together until Jack`s passing. Their motorhome travels across North America were legend, as Helve loved travelling, exploring and always learning. She had a deep love for animals and the outdoors. In later years Helve enjoyed volunteering her time at the Victoria Hospital, was very active at Epiphany Lutheran Church, enjoyed her painting group and classes, was an accomplished writer, and was always ready for an invite out with family or friends. Helve was a fiercely independent woman, and life events eventually had her downsizing to Riverwood Square Assisted Living which quickly became home and extended family.

We are so grateful to Riverwood management and special staff who afforded Helve such wonderful care, love, new friends and family…and helping hands that loved and cared for `Felix`. Helve lived her life with hope and courage, humour and grace; and we will miss her.

As per her wishes, cremation has taken place, and due to COVID restrictions no formal service will take place.

Our special thanks to Dr. Jacob and staff of 3 North at Grace Hospital for their care and compassion over her last days.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Helve`s memory to the Winnipeg Humane Society.
