Obituary for Jack Langtry

With deep sadness and heavy hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved partner, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather Jack on March 31, 2020 at the age of 95 years at St. Boniface Hospital.

Jack was born on Thursday, January 15, 1925, in Keeler, Saskatchewan. He lived in Saskatchewan until the age of 14 when the family moved to Stonewall to run a fox farm.

He was predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Jean, and brother Bud.

He is survived by his partner, Joan Pilkey; children Brian (Linda), Linda (Paul), David (Bozena) and Mark (Shannon); grandchildren Christopher (Christine), Mike (Christina), Jeff (Rhonda), Phil, Christine (Charles), Andrew (Susie), Robert (Joanna), Amanda (Luke) and Jesse (Alyssa); great-grandchildren Sarah (Elliot), Riley, Stefan, Devon, Kayla, Andrea (Mat), Brennan, Halina, Bence, Dominik and Roman; great-great-grandchildren Lily, Nora and Briar; brother Stan and numerous nieces and nephews.

Jack served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II, stationed in Halifax. He met Jean at a dance in Stony Mountain in 1946 and they were married in 1947. They lived in Chicago for one year for him to become a Brew Master (he was Valedictorian for his class in 1953), and, after working as an Assistant Brew Master in Winnipeg, he joined his father and brother in the family business, Victor Fox Foods Limited, where he continued until into his 80s.

Jack was an extremely kind, compassionate, caring, loving, generous, patient, humble man, who always put others before himself. He never complained and always found the positive in everyone and every situation. He always gave good advice and guidance whenever – and only if – asked. He was an avid reader and knowledgeable about many things – he was a master at trivia and could answer almost every question thrown his way! He loved camping and fishing at Shoal Lake and Royal Lake – spending hour upon hour driving the boat while his family focused on fishing. He loved travelling the world over and loved to experience new places and new adventures. He was selfless, always putting others before himself. He went out of his way to make others happy, to feel they were special and to make them know they were appreciated. He was devoted to his family and loved having family dinners every Sunday with over 20 people for over 40 years.

At his request, there will be no funeral or memorial service. He welcomes everyone to raise a glass or two of wine in memory and celebration of his long life well lived.

He never looked for praises
He was never one to boast
He just went on quietly working
For the ones he loved the most.

His dreams were seldom spoken
His wants were very few
And most of the time his worries
Went unspoken too.

He was there…A firm foundation
Through all our storms of life
A sturdy hand to hold on to
In times of stress and strife.

A true friend we could turn to
When times were good or bad
One of our greatest blessings
The man that we called Dad.
