Obituary for Jeannette May Metcalfe

Our mother, Jeannette Metcalfe aged 89, passed peacefully at home on Tuesday afternoon, June 1st, 2021. Geoffrey Metcalf was present to share in her parting tear as she was welcomed into the hands of God. Jeannette is survived by children and grandchildren: Geoffrey (Leah, Matthew), Robin & Karyna (Jenna, Danielle), Alix (Joshua, Mariah – great grandchildren Mila, Benson), Laura & Sam, as well as son Bryan & family. She will be especially missed by grandchildren Camille & London of the eldest and most beloved son, Gerie who passed in 2016. She was also predeceased by husband George (married 58 years) and parents Alice & Harry Lequier, siblings Marlene, Pat, Lorne and Eilene, and survived by sisters Doreen, Leona, and brothers Joe, Bryan, and Roland.

Jeannette was born in Portage La Prairie in 1932, married George in 1951 with 6 children born from 1953-61. She was a mainstay of all the family, the community (Sturgeon Creek), and the church (St. Andrews Anglican). She was politically active and engaged in positive change for the community, where she managed many successful election campaigns. She also volunteered at a residence for single mothers, the Legion Ladies' Auxiliary, the Winnipeg Library Board, the Civic Charities Committee and Meals-on-Wheels, visited people with illnesses, provided not only her strength and support but also meals and transportation for medical appointments, and was recognized by the Governor General's Medal for Volunteers. Jeannette could not say no to a person in need and will be missed and blessed by all who were touched by her kindness.

Due to the current restrictions on social gathering, a funeral/memorial service is postponed to the summer or fall, to be held at St. Andrews Anglican Church at the “Rose Garden” 2700 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3J-0R1.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the above Church.
