Obituary for Jocelyn Morlock

JOCELYN VICTORIA MORLOCK

We are so deeply saddened to announce the passing of our beautiful much-loved Jocelyn on March 27, 2023, in Vancouver.

Jocelyn is survived by her partner John Korsrud, mother Brenda Morlock, and brother Jeff Morlock, as well as many relatives. She was predeceased by her father Len Morlock in 1999, and her grandma Marie Schmidt in 2003, grandpa Victor Schmidt in 1960, and her special great-aunt Olga Palmer in 2020.

Jocelyn was born on December 14, 1969, at St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg and grew up there. She was a beautiful gift, and from her birth, brought great joy to her family.

Jocelyn was a happy, curious and creative child who delighted in the world around her and her happiness gave even more joy to her family.

When Jocelyn found something that really interested her, she would persevere even at a very young age. She began to knit when she was only about six, and she became a great knitter throughout her life; sometimes creating her own sweater patterns. She always thought of others and wanted to share and give to others even as a child, so her family and friends have been recipients of many lovingly created knitted items. When she was here for the month of December this past year, she completed a treasured pair of warm wool socks for her mom.

Jocelyn loved books and anything musical from babyhood. She also liked to play with her younger brother, creating play scenes together with their toys and discovering new things together on family travels. Family swim times at the Y with their special cousin Katherine were lots of fun too on summer days.

When Jocelyn was seven, her grandma surprised the family with a new piano when she heard that Jocelyn would like to take piano lessons. Playing the piano was fun for Jocelyn and she sometimes created her own little melodies. She always looked forward to her lessons from Mrs. G. Spencer, as she grew from seven to seventeen and graduated from GCCI with numerous awards and entrance scholarships.

It was only in the middle part of her grade twelve year that Jocelyn told us how much she would like to go to Brandon U, to study music. She was very young, but since she was accepted at her audition and had a scholarship too, we had to let her try and see if a musical career was going to be in her future.

Jocelyn thrived at Brandon University as she studied piano under the guidance of Professor Robert Richardson Sr. and later composition with Dr. Patrick Carrabre and received her Piano Performance degree in 1994. Then she began her studies at UBC for a Master’s and received her Doctorate (DMA) in 2002 which required years of hard work.

Jocelyn’s achievements have been many, from that time to now, but the most important was that she composed so much beautiful music which has been performed by many musicians in Canada and around the world and which has been enjoyed by many audiences. Jocelyn worked very hard at composing the best music that she could and always made revisions to a piece before giving it to the musicians. Deadlines were the only things that prevented even more revisions.

Jocelyn was always interested in creating music that moved people and she did that so well. Her tributes in memory of her dad (Lacrimosa), and her grandma (Exaudi), after they passed away, are just two of the many wonderful pieces that Jocelyn composed.

When approached by the National Arts Centre to write a piece honouring Amanda Todd, she was reluctant to do so until Carol Todd told Jocelyn all about her daughter. Then Jocelyn was able to create My Name is Amanda Todd. It was first performed in 2016 and later won a Juno for best classical composition of the year in 2018.

Jocelyn gave us so much with her beautiful music and also as a teacher of many new composers. As well, she held numerous professional positions and also volunteered in many capacities in the music community.

Jocelyn was a very empathetic person and did whatever she could to help her family and others and she tried to make the world a better place by the way she lived her life.

We have been overwhelmed by the many tributes to our amazing Jocelyn by so many in the music community in Canada and all of your expressions of sympathy. Also, we are very thankful for all of the kindness and support from relatives, friends and next door neighbors in the past weeks.

Jocelyn will be so very much missed by her partner John, her mother Brenda, and her brother Jeff. We will love her always and know that all of her goodness will not be forgotten. Her music will be her legacy. May peace be with you dear Jocelyn, now and forever.

A celebration of life for Jocelyn will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 30, 2023, at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Ave. Winnipeg. The celebration will be livestreamed and available to view on Jocelyn Morlock’s memorial page at www.neilbardalfuneralhome.com

If you wish, donations in memory of Jocelyn may be made to an organization or group of your choice in the music community, or The Canadian Mental Health Association, or a charity of your choice.

Interment will be in the family plot at All Saints Cemetery, at a later date.
