Obituary for Joyce Aitken

Joyce Aitken
May 14, 1927 - November 29, 2023

On November 29, Phyllis Joyce Aitken passed away peacefully at the age of 96. She was predeceased by her parents George and Anita Aitken, her sister-in-law Betty Aitken, and her brother-in-law Bert Kroeker. She is survived by her brother Ken Aitken of Pickering, Ontario, and her sister Anita Kroeker of Winnipeg; her nephews and nieces Brian Aitken (Cindy), George Aitken (Dawn), Chuck Kroeker (Monique), Jamie Aitken (June), Barbara Orieux, and Nancy Finlay (Rob); and many great-nieces and great-nephews.

Joyce grew up in St. James and graduated from United College. After working as a private secretary, she decided to dedicate herself to a teaching career. She taught high school math in the St. James-Assiniboia School Division for many years. Her personal studies culminated with a Master's Degree in Math Education from Rutgers University in New Jersey.

Joyce was an accomplished pianist who also enjoyed handbell ringing and singing in church and community choirs. She was an avid traveller, an enthusiastic member of ADK Sorority, a cross-country skier and tennis player, and a generous supporter of many charities. Above all, she enjoyed spending time with her nieces and nephews.

Joyce's family is very grateful to all the wonderful staff at Home Instead Trusted Care and then West Park Manor for the excellent care she received. We are also grateful to Mary Rose Coffey and Heather Birchall for their devoted friendship to Joyce during her final years.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Siloam Mission or Crescent-Fort Rouge United Church.

A Memorial Service for Joyce will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, May 25, 2024, at the Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Avenue.
