Obituary for Laura Elizabeth Grossman (Schmall)

Born October 18, 1934, in Morris Manitoba.
Died November 12, 2020, in Winnipeg Manitoba at age 86.

Laura passed away suddenly, yet not unexpectedly, after a lengthy challenge with dementia and a short medical illness.

Faithful and loving, kind and patient, she was predeceased by husband Alfred; parents Phillip and Agathe Schmall; siblings Harry Schmall and Margaret Glover, brother-in-law Richard Grossman, sister-in-law Anne Grossman and parents-in-law John and Emma Grossman.

Survived by her brothers-in-law Egon Grossman, Richard Glover, and sister-in-law Adeline Schmall, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She will be forever missed by children Christine (Eric Hansen), Paul (Patti Ramage) and five grandchildren, Andrew (Bethany) and Janine Hansen, Katie, Jack and Hayley Grossman.

Mom’s childhood memories centered around growing up in Morris in a loving home with parents and siblings whom she adored. It was these memories that sustained her while in care. The focus of Mom’s life was faith and family. She met Dad at church in Morris and they married in 1956. She became a member of Hope Lutheran Church on moving to Winnipeg, serving in a number of capacities including church secretary and treasurer. Mom was an active participant in Lutheran Women’s Missionary League where she enjoyed fellowship and put her skills as a knitter and quilter to good use. Mom was devoted to her children and grandchildren and they were the centre of her world. She freely gave of her time to help care for her grandchildren and treasured those moments baking, playing with blocks and making clothes for their dolls.

We hope to have a celebration of Mom's life once the restrictions of the pandemic have eased.

In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, Canadian Lutheran World Relief (CLWR), the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, or a charity of your choice.

The family would like to express our appreciation and thanks to Pembina Place Mennonite Personal Care Home, for their loving care of Laura, these last 4 years.
