LETITIA MARGARET TAYLOR
NEE STEWART
1927 -2022

Letitia Margaret Taylor (nee Stewart) was born July 10th 1927 in Glasgow, Scotland. Her Mother made the trip from Winnipeg just so she would be born a Scot. They returned to Winnipeg 5 months later. Her Father was a switchman for the CNR.

Letty’s childhood focused on the family’s small business which was landscaping for Elmwood Cemetery. She would sow seeds, plant and cut flowers, and eventually take orders. After business school, she worked for Great West Life in the statistics department, and volunteered at the General Hospital.

She met the love of her life Ernie at a house party in early 1946, and they decided to marry later that year. Ernie travelled to Vancouver to work with his brother Jack in the real estate business, and he returned to Winnipeg where they were married October 4, 1946. They moved to Victoria for a year, and then back to Winnipeg to be with family and friends.

Their Son, Bruce, was born 1949, who at age 6, wanted to learn to play the bagpipes. Letty and her Mother had been actively pushing the local scout master in the Lord Selkirk Boy Scout District to start a pipe band, and in 1957 the beginnings of the Lord Selkirk District Boy Scout Pipe Band was formed. The young pipers practiced on pencils for the first few months, as there was no money for chanters. A ladies auxiliary was formed, and enough money was made in the production of Mealy Puddings to purchase three sets of pipes, and other equipment. The basement of Letty’s house smelled of onions for years afterwards

Letty and Ernie enjoyed their beach cabin at Lester Beach, and began travelling to Bermuda, St. Lucia, Trinidad and finally Barbados, which they chose as their permanent winter getaway location. They spent many wonderful years and made life long friends at Golden View Apartments in Holetown.

Letty was an avid stamp collector, as was her Mother, Great Aunt ,and Great Great Aunt. Her collection was a compilation of the family collectors, and included the British Commonwealth, U.S.A., and the United Nations. She loved the hobby, and was an Honorary Life Member of the Winnipeg Philatelic Society.

Letty was an active member of P.E.O. an International Sisterhood for over 50 years. She was past president of Chapter “M” in Winnipeg, and loved all of her sisters very much. She particularly enjoyed convention, and attended regularly.

Letty was very proud of her family, Bruce and Vera, her Grand Children, Sharon (Esteban) and Gordon, and Great Grand Daughter Ruby. Together she and Ernie celebrated their 70th Anniversary in 2016.
