Obituary for Maria Ilona Csuta

Maria Ilona (née Sörös) Csuta
Feb 17, 1926 – Jan 8, 2023

Peacefully, on Sunday, January 8, 2023, Maria Ilona Csuta (née Sörös, aged 96, passed away at Grace Hospital with her devoted husband and their only daughter by her side.

Maria was predeceased by her beloved sons, Leslie and Frank (Patty Sawchuk), as well as her parents, Ferenc Sörös and Magdolna Meszaros Sörös and older brothers, Ferenc (Magdolna) and Boldizsar (Gabriella).

Maria was born in Kecskemét, Hungary, on February 17, 1926. When she was six her mother died and her father, whom Maria idolized, later remarried twice. Maria considered them to be like second mothers, and she often spoke fondly of their care and kindness.

Hard-working and pragmatic, Maria attended vocational school for training in sewing machine service and repair. She found work as a factory seamstress in Budapest, where she remained up until the Hungarian Revolution of 1956.

Maria made the slow ocean crossing to Canada, where she arrived in March of 1957, but not before declining multiple marriage proposals. She settled in Winnipeg, where she met and married Laszlo Csuta, a fellow hard-working, quick-witted and resourceful Hungarian who had only recently arrived in Winnipeg himself. He proved to be the love-of-her-life, and together they built a beautiful life for their small family.

Maria was a strong faith based woman. She faced life knowing the power of prayer and the faith in Gods word.
A dedicated wife and mother, Maria’s dedication to her family and friends were paramount. She taught her children strength, compassion, honesty and love. Which she demonstrated each and everyday.

Diagnosed with dementia in her 90’s, Maria was able to live out her days in the comfort and familiarity of her own home during one of the worst global pandemics in a century, thanks to the dedicated caretaking provided by her loving husband and daughter, with additional support from a committed team of homecare and nursing professional provided through Manitoba homecare. In particular, the family wishes to acknowledge and thank (Angie, Carmen, Juvy, Raminder, Erin, Janet, Lisa and Lise) for the care and compassion they provided for Maria and bonds they formed with the family. Thank you also to the Emergency and 3rd floor South Wing team at Grace Hospital.

Maria is survived by “Apu” Lazslo and her daughter Erika (Cindy). Left to mourn, numerous Sörös and Csuta family members back in Hungary.

A memorial service will be officiated by Monseigneur Maurice Comeault on Monday, January 16, 2023 at 10 a.m. at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre at 3030 Notre Dame Ave, Winnipeg, MB. Attendees are requested to follow masking and social distancing protocols. For those unable to attend in-person, a recording will be made available shortly thereafter.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Grace Hospital Foundation would be greatly appreciated.
