Obituary for May Sylvia Peiluck

Sylvia May Peiluck
nee Kardal
May 1, 1941 - May 3,2023

It is with heavy hearts we announce the sudden, yet peaceful passing of May Peiluck at the Gimli Betel Home on May 3, 2023.

Monday, May 1st was May’s 82 birthday, and we are so grateful we had the opportunity to celebrate that day with her as there was nothing more May loved than sharing a cup of coffee with family and friends.

May was born in Gimli, Manitoba in 1941 to Oli and Sylvia Kardal. May’s parents were both accomplished musicians and instilled a love for music, Icelandic culture, education, and a passion for sharing it. The family lived in Gimli until May was 12 years old and after in St. Paul, Minnesota. May returned to Canada after graduating high school to attend teachers’ college in Winnipeg in 1960 and later obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Winnipeg.
May had an extensive teaching career that spanned 45 years beginning in a one-room school north of Ashern, Manitoba at Silver Bay School. May then returned to the Gimli Public School to teach for 5 years and then to Montrose School in Winnipeg.

While raising her family, May continued to teach at the Winnipeg Beach School for 14 years and ended her teaching career in Gimli at the Sigurbjorg Stefansson School. During her career, May sat on many boards and committees but her focus was always her students. May inspired and supported so many young people in their pursuit of music and education. After retiring in 2006, May spent numerous hours volunteering with the Evergreen Festival of the Arts, the Gimli Heritage Project, Evergreen Basic Needs, Gimli Palliative Care, and the Gimli Lutheran Church.

Throughout her life May maintained an unyielding focus on her Icelandic heritage. Icelandic was May’s first spoken language, and she maintained her fluency throughout her life. May’s pride in her Icelandic heritage was shared with her family, her friends, and her students. She made trips back to Iceland to visit her family and was thrilled to go with her grandchildren in 2006. May was honoured to do the Toast to Iceland at the Islendingadagurinn in 1994. She spoke of those who immigrated to this country and the contribution of the Icelandic culture to Canada.

May married Tony Peiluck on March 27, 1971, and built their home on the Peiluck family farm in Gimli. May was proud of their home on the farm and loved sharing it with family and friends. The coffee pot was always on, and the treats were set out on the table. May’s baking was legendary. Her Kleinur, Ponnukokur and tarts were so delicious. The parties hosted were always accompanied with someone on the piano, a sing-along and don’t forget the crazy box of hats.

May’s friendships meant so much to her. Over the years she was a season ticket holder to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers with Larry Moore and Margaret Komar, she travelled with Ruth Kostiuk, weekly lunch dates with Jackie Walker, shopping and adventures with Marion Korolyk, Ellen Gergatz and Myrna Chapko as well as daily phone calls with her lifelong friend Sella Benedictson and, prior to her passing, Gloria Rudney.

May gave so much of herself to her community and her students – she also gave all of her love and support to her family. May was so proud of her children and her grandchildren.
May will be sadly missed by her son Peter (Kara) and daughter Margrose (Shawn) Madak, as well as her beloved grandchildren Aurora and Stefan Peiluck whom she adored. May also leaves to mourn, her sisters, Jonina Kardal (Porbjorn Vignisson) and Anna Maria Kardal (Asgeir Olafsson), Sister-in-Law Mary Coppin and good friend Paul Lamonte. May leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins and many dear friends. May was predeceased by her loving husband Tony Peiluck, her parents Oli and Sylvia Kardal, Father and Mother-In-Law Peter and Rose Peiluck, Brother-In-Law John and his wife Ann Peiluck, Brother-In Law Wayne Coppin and nephew David Peiluck.

Funeral Services will be held at the Gimli Lutheran Church on Monday, May 15th at 1pm - coffee and lunch to follow at the Gimli Lakeview Hotel.

The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the staff at the Gimli Betel home for the kind and compassionate care May received over the last six months that she was a resident, and also to Paul Lamonte for being such a good friend.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Gimli Lutheran Church, Box 118 Gimli, MB R0C 1B0.
