Obituary for Melvin Traynor

On May 3, 2022, at the age of 71, Melvin Gordon Traynor peacefully passed away at Riverview Health Centre after a brief illness.

He leaves to mourn his loving wife Brenda (nee Phillips), daughters Leanne and Stacey, sisters Louise (George) Bilowus, Barb (Al) Carmichael, all of Winnipeg, brother Tim Traynor (Sandy Fordeczka) of Okanagan Centre, BC, and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and their families. He was predeceased by his mother Agnes Thacker (nee Vandenberg) and step-father George Thacker.

Mel, the oldest of four children, was born in Eriksdale, Manitoba but spent most of his years living in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Upon his graduation from Tec Voc High School he became a Cartographer/Draftsman with the Province of Manitoba, which was a position he held until his retirement in 2014.

Mel was a man of many interests. Throughout his lifetime he enjoyed spending time outdoors, whether that was summers at Falcon and Toniata Lake, hiking the Mantario trail, golfing, camping, gardening, cross country skiing or just going for a bike ride. Mel had a love for books and had an eclectic taste in music which he passed on to his two daughters. Mel was fond of playing and watching a variety of sports but he really enjoyed the sport of curling. Mel enjoyed teaching new curlers when they joined the Mixed Buffalo Curling Club, as well as coaching his two daughters. He gave back to the curling community by sitting on the Charleswood Curling Club executive but the best thing that came from the sport was meeting Brenda when they played in mixed league together.

Mel will be remembered for his giving and helpful nature, his love of a bad pun and his amazing homemade apple pie. Mel’s family invites family and friends to attend a memorial service to celebrate Melvin’s life and share the memories we have of him, on Friday, May 27, 2022 at 2:00pm at the Neil Bardal Funeral Centre (3030 Notre Dame Ave).

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Mel’s name to the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation or a charity of your choice.
