Obituary

Obituary for Phyllis Isabel Johannesson

Phyllis was born in Toronto, Ontario April 1, 1925. After completing schooling at Central Commerce, she worked for several years at the Provincial Succession Duties. This was prior to meeting her future husband and love of her life Dr. Thorberg Johannesson whom she married September 14th, 1946. Phyllis then relocated to Manitoba where they lived in Gilbert Plains for one year, Arborg for 7 years and then lastly settling in Winnipeg in 1957 where they raised 3 sons and a daughter.

Throughout her life, Phyllis was a very active person. She was a member of the Westworth United Church and taught Sunday school for many years. Volunteer work included the Ladies Auxiliary of the Misericordia and the Nearly New Shop of The McKinnon Guild to benefit the Children’s Hospital Foundation.

After Phyllis’s children had grown, she faced a new challenge and went back to school at the University of Winnipeg where she excelled. She particularly enjoyed Psychology. Later, she was employed at Handles and the Post Office.

Phyllis was an ardent and excellent Bridge player and thoroughly enjoyed her games with her dear friends and fine people that she met playing Duplicate Bridge. At one time she was a member of 3 bridge clubs playing several times a week.

Being an extremely social person, Phyllis never said no to an invitation and loved getting together with family and friends for lunches, parties and gatherings. She especially loved summers at the lake with family even if it meant crossing rough water to an Island property. Christmas was her favorite holiday and she always made it special for all.

Phyllis was a devoted wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother and will be deeply missed by many. She leaves to mourn her sons James (Manon), David, Alan, and daughter Susan Holliday (Mark); grandsons Erik, Bradley and Coleman; great-grandchildren Gage, Jessie and Devin; and Sister Bettie MacDonald. She was predeceased by her husband Thorberg, sister Ruth McElhinney, mother Emily MacDonald (nee Kirk) and father James MacDonald.

The family would like to thank the excellent staff on 3 South at the Grace General Hospital and Dr. George Borrett for their kind and compassionate care of Phyllis.

A private family Celebration of Life will take place at a later date.

Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations may be made in Phyllis’s memory to the Salvation Army or Siloam mission of Winnipeg.
