Obituary for Prudencia Matitu

Prudencia (Dencie) Matitu
November 8, 1946 – February 12, 2022

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Prudencia (Dencie) Mercado Matitu at the age of 74. After a courageous five-year battle with PSP, Dencie passed away peacefully at home with family by her side.

Dencie will be dearly missed by her husband Luciano (Cian) Matitu; her daughter Lucy-Ann, son-in-law Christopher, and grandson Hiro Wiens; her siblings Benedicta Mercado, Wilma Pascua, Myrna Soriano, Thelma Ubando, Herman Mercado, Anelia Lumahan, Menchie Calbario, Kemelita Joven, Miguel Jr. She is predeceased by her parents Prisca and Miguel Sr. Mercado.

Born in Tebag, Santa Barbara, Philippines, Dencie was the eldest of 10 siblings and was the matriarch of the family. She was strict in managing the household but generous with her love and support - giving blessings on relationships, supporting her sisters through college, sending money and packages to the Philippines, and sponsoring family members to join her in Canada.

In 1979, Dencie came to Canada as the first of her family to leave the Philippines – a privilege and responsibility she met with a great sense of duty. She married her husband Cian of 37 years in 1985 and they welcomed their daughter Lucy-Ann two years later. In 2015 she retired after 25 years of working at the Grace General Hospital as a seamstress, a profession that she excelled at and enjoyed.

Dencie will be remembered by her upfront personality, strong character, and her love and commitment to her family. Dencie loved to cook - she enjoyed hosting regular get-togethers where friends/family would enjoy Filipino food, play 41 and Tonghits and sing karaoke till the late hours of the night. She was a natural performer and will be remembered for her beautiful voice and her love for dancing the tango, boogie, and cha-cha. She also enjoyed bowling, playing volleyball and tennis, and sewing clothes for herself and her daughter.

Dencie was a loving and supportive wife and mother. She took pride in caring for her family and left them with beautiful memories and many life lessons to guide them. She paved the way to give them a better life than she had. Her family is immensely grateful to her, and she will be dearly missed.

A graveside service was held with close family and friends on Thursday, February 17th, 2022, at Brookside Cemetery. Condolence can be sent directly to the family or through Neil Bardal Funeral Centre.
