Obituary for Robert (Bob) Francis McAfee

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Robert F McAfee after a lengthy illness. He was surrounded by family at Health Sciences Center, sharing a joke or two right till the end.

Bob was born in Ottawa, Ontario, graduated from Hillcrest High School, and joined the RCMP in 1969. He served in Manitoba until his retirement in 1997 and then followed his dream when he purchased his own highway tractor. He drove for a few years and then became dispatcher for Gardewine/Northern Deck.
He was predeceased by his father, Ernest E McAfee, mother Mary E Hyland, brother in law Robert Coote, father in law Frank Perchalski, and mother in law Stella Perchalski. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Elaine (Perchalski), his three children, Collin McAfee, Amber (Quenton) Ducharme, and Kristen (Cory) Fetterly. Six grandchildren, Haylee, Chloe, Quenton, Carter, Brooklynn, and Avery were the highlights of a life well lived. His sisters, Barbara Derksen and Linda Coote will miss his involvement in their lives.

Bob enjoyed playing cards, riding his lawn tractor, surprising people with a joke or two and the never ending stories. A highlight of his day was having coffee with neighbours Merv and Nonie. Holidays spent with family at the lake left lasting memories for his children. His nephews remember visiting him at the police station and occasionally ending up behind bars when they were little. He coached a hockey team in Ashern but this wasn’t the only sport he enjoyed. The excitement of wrestling interrupted many a conversation at home especially in the later years. He loved taking his kids for a cool dip during the hot Manitoba summers. Bob loved a variety of vehicles, anything that would go faster than he should. Coworkers state that he was a straight forward communicator and encouraged them to do their best. The memories he left behind will endure forever.

Our heartfelt thanks go to all the healthcare professionals (Health Sciences Center, Selkirk Regional Health Center) who looked after Bob during his many hospital stays. We wish to acknowledge with warm regards Dr. Justin Rivard (Surgeon) and Dr. Fred Aoki (Infectious Disease Specialist) for the many hours of care and medicinal wisdom.

At Bob’s request, a small private service for immediate family will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be submitted to CancerCare or the Diabetes Foundation.

“Perhaps they are not the stars, but rather openings in Heaven where the love of our lost ones pours through and shines down upon us to let us know they are happy.” Anonymous

I remember from our work together on the Winnipeg River at Lac du Bonnet and Wabowden/Cross Lake. Always a pleasure to work with and a few memorable stories always resulted from our time together. Condolences to Elaine and family, Bob will remembered by many as a central figure wherever he was. Bill Adams & Terry Dyer-Adams.

Elaine and family. May we offer our deepest condolences. My last correspondence with Bob left me thinking of our many laughs that we had at Selkirk Detachment and on the road. I will cherish those memories. We had a common interest from the first day I got to Selkirk talking about trucks more than police work. I am sure we solved many problems of the world during our coffee breaks. Thanks for the memories Bob and may you rest in peace.

Having read the obituary posted in memory of Bob I was reminded of the years we served together in Federal policing of the Wildlife and Boating regulations in the 1980s. Bob was a good man and a fine police officer with a quick wit and a well intended mischievousness about him. He always seemed to see humor where others might not. I did not realize how closely our service records matched as we both retired the same year with similar service. Bob's struggles with cancer began in 2014, the same year as my late wife began her struggles with cancer. It saddens me that Bob has lost his battle and my sincere condolences are offered to Elaine and the family.

To Bob's family my sincere condolences. I first met Bob when posted to Grand Marais Detachment for the summer of 74 being posted there for the extra summer manpower We had many great experiences and laughs together. definitely agree he was a straight forward communicator and you always know where you stood with him and always had your back. Over the years we ran into each other in Selkirk and most recently at H.S.C and caught up with each other. Rest peacefully my friend...........Ken Amirault
