It is with deep sorrow that the family announces the passing of Robert (Bob) Carlson, beloved husband, father and grandfather, on Friday, March 13, 2020 at Tuxedo Villa Personal Care Home.
Bob was born in Kipling, Ontario, on September 22, 1933. The family left Ontario early in his life and Bob settled in Winnipeg in 1950. He obtained employment with Swanson Construction and took his Carpenter Apprenticeship in the early 50’s. He spent many years as General Foreman with Swanson Construction and Winnipeg Construction, supervising many large projects in Winnipeg and rural Manitoba.
In 1964 Bob was hired by the City of Winnipeg as a Building Inspector, where he was employed for 30 years, retiring in 1994. He spent 20 years in the field and ten years as Assistant Chief. It was an excellent career for Bob and he made many lasting friendships while working for the City. Throughout his life Bob was a lover of sports, played hockey and baseball as a youth and spent many years playing SloPitch with Charleswood and Winnipeg South. He was a member of Fort Rouge Curling Club and Assiniboine Golf Course and had many friends in both places. He was a member of the City of Winnipeg Retirees Association and a member of Westworth United Church where he served as Chairman of the Property Committee for a number of years. After a move to St. Vital, Bob and Jeanne transferred their membership to Meadowood United Church and enjoyed the fellowship there.
In 1958, at a curling party, Bob met the love of his life, Jeanne Wither. They were married at Harstone United Church in June of 1961 and recently celebrated their 58 t h anniversary. They were each other’s best friends and spent the majority of their time together, golfing, curling, travelling, camping, doing various renovations on both houses they owned, playing cards, and raising their family.
Bob is survived by his loving wife, Jeanne; his son Doug and wife Lisa Boland, granddaughters Madeleine and Amelia and their mother, Lorraine Decock; his daughter, Sandra and her husband, Mark Robbins, grandson Nash and his father, Kevin Hanna; daughter Tannis and her husband Scott Hewitt, granddaughter Brooke, grandson Mitchell. Bob loved being a grandfather and these five little ones were the light of his life. He called them his “Full House” when they were little, three of a kind and a pair. Dad was a fun-loving man who could build anything, fix anything, or repair anything and helped look after all our houses. He whistled wherever he went and was quick to laugh or to strike up a conversation. He is survived by his brother, John (Diane) of Verner, Ontario and sister, Ina MacDonald, of Powell River, B.C.
After retiring in 1994 Bob and Jeanne happily spent the winter months in Bonita Springs, Florida, where he took up woodcarving, another hobby he loved and excelled at.
A service celebrating the life of Robert Carlson will be held at a future date and announced in the newspaper. Cremation has taken place.
In lieu of flowers, donation to St. Boniface Hospital & Research Foundation, 409 Tache, Winnipeg, R2H 2A6 would be appreciated.
