Obituary for Robert Hucal

Robert Hucal, beloved and devoted husband of Margaret, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on October 30, 2020.

Bob was born and raised in Winnipeg’s North End. He loved his city and appreciated the many opportunities that were given to him here. He gave back in every way he could, and he had a wonderful life here.

Bob began his law career as a student working at Monk Goodwin in the early 1960’s and continued with that firm until his death. He was always grateful for the mentorship and values he received from the senior lawyers at Monk Goodwin in his early years as a lawyer. As the years passed, he carried on that tradition with the bright young people who came into the firm and delighted in seeing them develop and flourish.

To Bob, being a lawyer meant helping people. He formed bonds of friendship with clients and their families, extending over many decades and including three or four generations. He loved his work.

One of Bob’s greatest pleasures was collecting and donating historical Canadian Art. He treasured his many associations with gallery owners, curators and institutions across Canada, but especially here in Winnipeg with the Winnipeg Art Gallery. A special thank you goes to John Ingram of Ingram Gallery in Toronto. One long distance art purchase thirty-three years ago grew into a special friendship of absolute trust and respect.
The kindness and care from friends and neighbours has been overwhelming, thank you.

A special thank you to his associates at Monk Goodwin LLP, the Tallman family, and Bob’s assistant
Jillian Hart for their support.
