Obituary for Roger Dennis

Our hearts are broken. Suddenly and peacefully on April 7, 2021, Roger Dennis, loving husband, devoted father and proud grandfather, passed away at the age of 81. He is survived by his beloved wife Hollie; daughter Alison (Marty) granddaughters, Katherine and Grace; son Colin (Renata) grandson Ethan; son Travis (Angie); sisters, Margaret Owen and Barbara Fisher as well as extended family and friends. Roger was predeceased by his father Victor, mother Lucy, and wife Donna.

A lifelong Winnipegger, Roger graduated from the Institute of Chartered Accountancy in 1964 and took quiet pride in later achieving his Fellowship designation. He spent the majority of his professional career dutifully in the service of the Provincial Government.

Roger enjoyed many varied interests and the personal relationships that came with them. His faith was very important to him and his loss will be felt by St. George’s Church, Crescentwood, to which he was most dedicated. Singing was a passion, having spent years up in the choir loft, performing with the Gilbert & Sullivan Society, Brochan Lom Men’s Choir, Joie de Vivre and just about anyone in need of a rich baritone. He loved curling and spending time chucking rocks at ‘The Rouge’, and countless rounds of golf with friends. Roger was a true friend and tireless volunteer, somehow always managing to answer the call when needed. He will be missed by many.

Dad was blessed with a keen mind, a clever wit, a gracious manner and a strong appreciation of a good single malt ‘scottie’. He was a true gentleman, treating all with respect while living his life by the Golden Rule. We’ll miss his sage advice, timely sense of humour and the shining example he set. We love you, “Poppa”.

Due to current conditions a small memorial service will take place on April 17, with plans for a future larger celebration of life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. George’s Memorial Fund, 168 Wilton St., Winnipeg R3M 3C3 at or to a charity of your choosing.

G. D. (Gerry) Forrest

It is truly difficult to sum up the sorrow we share in the passing of someone who has been part of my life for in more than half a century. Roger and I met when he was an articling student on his way to being a Chartered Accountant. We both joined the civil service in the same department in the same year and had many adventures working together and traveling Manitoba. As other have said he was a true gentleman and very skilled in his profession but it was his inner self that always shone through whatever adversity we shared. Personally I will never forget the times we shared over all those years. Many stories could be told.
Words, I know however kind, can’t mend your heartache, but those of us who care, share your grief and wish you comfort and peace of mind. He will be truly missed.

My most sincere condolences to Hollie, Alison, Colin and your families. I will always cherish my time working with Roger. He was one of the good guys. I have fond memories of our road trips - always the scenic route with lots of good stories and lots of laughs. He was a gentle soul who will be sorely missed.

Dear Hollie, Please accept our sincere condolences. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this difficult time. Roger was a special person. He had such a strong sense of social responsibility as exhibited by his decades of service in government and his contribution to so many community organizations. With his deep rich voice his performances with various choirs over the tears brought joy and inspiration to many. He was a fun person with a delightful quiet sense of humour. We were fortunate to be in his and your company for a number of enjoyable occasions. It is our hope that you are supported by your faith, embraced by your family and uplifted by the warm memories of Roger and a rich full life. Paul and Roberta Thomas
