Obituary for Ruby Malazdrewicz

Ruby Malazdrewicz (R.N.)
(nee Magnusson) (Henriksen)
August 31, 1930 – January 31, 2022

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of our Mom, Ruby Malazdrewicz, 91 years of age, on January 31, 2022. Left to cherish her memory are her daughter Wendy (Mark Corley), sons Gary (Judi) and Forrester (Kim), stepson Dwayne (Hoy), seven grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Edward Malazdrewicz and her siblings, Mike Magnusson, Joy Fierce, Violet Sampson and Gus Sigurdson. Mom was the youngest of her siblings and when she was born Mom’s parents gave her siblings the honour of naming her. Because she had red hair and was thought to be a ‘gem’ her brothers and sisters named her “Ruby”.

Mom lived in Winnipeg until 1939 when she moved with her mom, Bjogga to Fort McMurray to be with her step-father Gus Trommberg. Mom knew at the early age of eleven that she wanted to be a nurse. She completed her grade 12 in Fort McMurray and in 1951 she took the train to Winnipeg to start her nurses’ training at the Winnipeg General Hospital, School of Nursing. She graduated in 1953 and her first nursing job was in the E.R. at the Winnipeg General Hospital. In 1957 she began working as a staff nurse with the Victorian Order of Nurses (V.O.N.). She loved driving to people’s homes to care for them and got to know many of her patients on a more personal level. By the end of 1968 she began working at the Cancer Foundation as a liaison nurse. Four years later she worked as an Infection Control nurse at the Health Sciences Centre where she was in charge of the prevention and spread of communicable diseases throughout the Children’s Ward. In 1980, Mom began working as a Research Nurse through the University of Manitoba. She organized and coordinated several research studies under the direction of various doctors. In 1981 Mom was a staff nurse at the Post-Polio Ward at the Winnipeg Municipal Hospital caring for patients who were in iron lungs. For the rest of Mom’s nursing career, she did research for doctors who were studying various diseases such as HIV and Hepatitis C. until she retired in 1989.

In 1979 Mom met and married the “Love of her Life”, Ed Malazdrewicz. They were wed on September 8, 1979 and on the 8th day of every month she received flowers from him. Unfortunately, Ed passed away just one year before their 20th anniversary. If they happened to be travelling on that day, he would stop at the side of the road and pick a bouquet for her. They enjoyed being snowbirds, spending winters in the Pine to Palm Resort Park in Weslaco, Texas. They loved spending the warmer months at their country home in Gimli, Manitoba, especially because of Mom’s Icelandic heritage.
Reading and writing were two of Mom’s passions. She was an avid reader and took several writing classes but never fulfilled her dream of having her work published. Mom loved gardening and their home was always surrounded by beautiful flower beds along with Ed’s perfectly manicured lawn. She was a sewer who taught her daughter the skill that she still practices today. Mom knit numerous Afghans that adorn all of our beds. Mom and Ed enjoyed gourmet cooking and shared many of their meals with family and friends.

Mom always said that there were three things that she was most proud of: Raising her three children, Marrying the ‘Love of her Life’ and Graduating as an R.N. in 1951.

A private family service is planned. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Condolences may be left at www.neilbardalinc.com

Rest in Peace, Mom and know that we will always remember and cherish all that you did for us.
