Obituary for Thorhildur Johanna Magnusson

Thora Magnusson (née Johannson) passed away peacefully at the age of 90 on January 14, 2024, at Concordia Place in East Kildonan.

Thinking of Thora, several words usually come to mind…warm, loving, gentle and kind. She certainly was all those things, but she was also intelligent, strong of mind, determined, and funny. She came from the small town of Arborg and got a great education there…she even studied Latin! One of her teachers had hoped she would go on to become a university professor. She chose another route, rising to the top of her field as an executive secretary in the financial world.

In 1956, Thora fell in love with and married another Icelandic Canadian, John Magnusson, and two children followed. Although she worked nine to five, she was always there for the kids as Mom, never missing any of the school and extracurricular events, and available for support, counsel and advice. In later years, she was there for her grandsons, too. Those boys couldn’t have been more perfect in her eyes, and she took great pride in all their accomplishments.

Thora had a fine sense of humor and when she and her sister Kris got together, there was much laughter. Music and church were big parts of her life. She played the piano for fun and sang in the Sherwood Park Lutheran Church choir for many years, where she had close friends. She was a good writer of short stories delineating events in her life and was confident at the podium when required to say a few words on an occasion like her 80th birthday or 50th wedding anniversary. Although she never really liked cooking, she could whip up a great Thanksgiving turkey dinner with gravy and stuffing, and some delicious desserts.

Thora is survived by her daughter Barb (Paul), son John (Debbie), sister Kris, grandson Erik, grandson Jason (Rahne), and several nieces, a nephew, a sister-in-law, and many cousins. Thora was preceded in death by her husband John, grandson Steven, and brother Siggi.

A Celebration of her Life will take place in early spring, when we may all remember the bright light of Thora as we take heart in the beauty of the season.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude and appreciation to the exceptional staff at Concordia Place Personal Care Home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Thora’s memory to the Concordia Foundation or the Alzheimer Society.
