Obituary for Valdine Deanne Thorbjorg Bjornsson

Peacefully on Saturday morning April 4, 2020, with her family by her side, Mom (Amma, Langamma) passed away at the Gimli Community Health Centre.

Mom leaves to mourn and cherish her memory, her children, Kent (Jonsi), Shawn (Sherry), Blair (Catherine), Dean; as well as her precious grandchildren Ashleigh (Calvin), Svein (Shannon), Morgan and Xander (Sidney) and her great-grand daughters, Fallyn and Freya. Mom is also survived by her brother Les (Sheryl) Geirholm, her sister Francine (Douglas) Albertson; sisters-in-law Olivia Stanley and Elizabeth Corkal; cousins, nieces, nephews; as well as her extended granddaughters Heather, Tayler and Madison Durward. She was predeceased by her parents, Kjartan and Gudny Geirholm; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Larus and Margaret Bjornsson; her sisters-in-law Aldis Bjornsson and Laura Schappert; her brothers-in-law, Ervin Stanley, Grant Schappert, Mercil Corkal and Vincent Palson; as well as numerous aunts and uncles and her special four-legged daughter Munchkin.

Valdine Bjornsson was born in Selkirk and raised in Gimli, where she attended school. Mom and Dad resided and raised their family in Fraserwood. Once her boys were of school age, Mom began her career with the Province of Manitoba, Department of Agriculture in Arborg. After many years of working with the Province, Mom retired to enjoy her family, especially her grandchildren.

Mom loved family. She was often organizing family reunions and documenting the various family trees on all sides of our family. Mom would treat our friends and anyone that came by as family. She always made sure that everyone was fed and had a place to stay. Mom even adopted a family from Cuba and took them under her wing. She was lovingly referred to as their Manager. She will be sadly missed by Hamri, Dismey, Leidys, Jennifer, Liz Laura and Daniela.

Mom was active with the Order of the Eastern Star, Selkirk Chapter No. 35 and was a member of the Fraserwood Hall Committee. Mom was extremely proud of her Icelandic heritage. She and Dad travelled to Iceland numerous times and always enjoyed their visits and adventures with family and friends while travelling around the country. Mom was also very active in the Gimli Icelandic Canadian Society and the Icelandic National League of North America, attending many conferences and often volunteering at the New Iceland Heritage Museum. Mom and Dad enjoyed their many vacations which included travelling around in their motor home and relaxing at Hnausa Campground.

After Dad’s passing - Mom returned to her hometown of Gimli to live, first to her condo in Aspen Park and then to Waterfront Centre. Mom enjoyed her time at Waterfront, especially her Kaffitimi family.

Cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life is being planned for Saturday July 18, 2020 at Johnson Hall, Gimli MB.

All family and friends may consider themselves her honorary pallbearers. A special family thank you is extended to all the staff at the Gimli Community Health Center for taking such great care of Mom (Valdine), especially during these uncertain and difficult times we are in. We thank you for allowing us to be with mom until the end. Thank you also to Vanessa Goodbrandt and her homecare staff for their thoughtfulness and helping with Mom’s care.

Við munum aldrei gleyma þér
Við elskum þig, hvíl í friði
Góða nótt elsku mamma
