Obituary for Wilfred Blommaert

Wilfred Hendrik Blommaert
December 29, 1931 – April 29, 2023

Wilfred was born in Sint-Maria-Horebeke, Belgium and immigrated to Canada in 1954. He was predeceased by his wife of 54 years Annie, twin brother Bernard, and younger brother Werner. His memory will be forever remembered by his daughter Sandra Smilski (Rob), grandchildren Danielle (Liam) and Caden, sister Sara (Arnold), sister-in-law Josephine and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Dad was very proud of his Belgian roots and kept strong ties to his family throughout the years. His love of chocolate and a good beer were true signs of his Belgian heritage.

Wilf studied agriculture and served in the Belgian military prior to moving to Canada. In Canada, he started a lifelong career in the agriculture industry working on a farm near Yorkton, Saskatchewan and then moving to Winnipeg where he worked at the U of M (Food Science), Canada Safeway and ending his career with the Canadian Egg Marketing Agency.

Dad was a life member of Kilcona Masonic Lodge and Khartum Temple Shrine Patrol, where he served in various positions. Always willing to help others, dad offered his time to many charities throughout the years. His friendly personality and smile left an impression on everyone he met.

Dad loved airplanes and visiting aviation exhibits, spending time with his grandchildren and our dog Ziggy, winter vacations in Mexico, summer getaways with Khartum Shrine, and watching the Blue Bombers.

Special thanks to the staff at Holy Family Home for their care and compassion over the last three years.
