Obituary for Petur Kenneth Mackenzie

Petur Kenneth Mackenzie
October 6, 1941 – March 3, 2021

It is with great sadness that the family of Petur Mackenzie announce his passing on Wednesday, March 3rd, 2021.

Petur was born and raised in Winnipeg, MB, graduating from Kelvin High School, and going on to attend the University of Manitoba for his Bachelor of Arts. He worked for the City of Winnipeg for many years and began enjoying retirement in 1997.

“Doych”, Petur’s long-lasting high school nickname, was a one of a kind guy, fiercely set in his ways and living life the way he wanted to live it. Though stoic and gruff in his way, Petur had a fierce love and loyalty towards his family and friends. He valued his Icelandic heritage, and had a great passion for hunting and fishing. He loved watching sports, never missing a Jets game since their return to Winnipeg, and espousing his opinion loudly on exactly how the team could improve and play better. Over the last 15 years, he chose to live his life at his cabin at Flanders Lake, joining the local snowmobile club, the Nopiming Sno-mads, enjoying visits and card-games at his friends, and joining in and winning more than his fair share of silent auction prizes every year at Flanders Fun Days and the annual Nopiming Lodge Pig Roast.

Petur is survived by his daughter Eryn, daughter-in-law Pat, grandchildren Alysha and Alex, great grandchildren Taylor, Jillian, Sophia and Jace, as well as his siblings Mike, Douglas and Glenys. He is also survived by his fur buddy, Gunner and chosen brother/childhood friend Glenn Greenberg.

Petur was predeceased by his parents Lillja and Kenneth and his beloved son Shane, whose passing hit him particularly hard.

According to Petur’s wishes there will be no formal service, and his friends and family will celebrate his life this summer in the place he loved, Flanders Lake.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Nopiming Sno-mads Box 10000, Lac du Bonnet, MB R0E 1A0

“Have a cold one, Doych!”

Mike,Glynis, Doug, Eryn and all the family. I just heard about Pete's passing today. I hadn't seen him in about 40 years but sure recall some good times we had when we were teenagers.

My sincere condolences

I am sorry to hear of Peturs passing. Our paths crossed in the mid to late sixties
at the University of Manitoba, parties and watching sports. He was a great guy.

I left Winnipeg in 1974 and lost touch.

Mike,Glynis, Doug, Eryn and all the family.
I was so sorry to hear of Doych's passing. A few days before that, he came to my mind, out of the blue. I called Glenn( my ex) to see how Doych was doing . I was going to call him to say hello, then Glenn called to tell me that he was in the hospital. So sorry I didn't get to talk to him one last time. I met Doych over 60 yrs. ago in Gimli through Glenn. He was a dear friend. For many years he would come to my and Glenn's place in Gimli for the Icelandic Celebration. He always brought his coleslaw, which we loved. He and Val even were our next-door neighbours in the city, for some time. That's how my and Glenn's son, Joel, became such good friends with Shane. Lots of history there. My heart goes out to all of you for your loss. I'm sure you have many fond memories to carry you through as I certainly do. I came across pictures of all of us in Gimli when we were still in our teens. Talk about memories! Thanks so much for including Glenn in the obituary and rightly so. Bless all of you. Ilena Zaramba

To All of the Mackenzie Family: This is a very sad time for our entire family. Pete was certainly one of a kind! Knowing how compromised he had become health wise, it is a relief that he did not have to endure a long road of pain and suffering. We send our deepest sympathy to all of you. Much love and hope in this difficult time. Gaile, David, and Kathleen Hiley
