Obituary for Rudolf Ewald Mehmel

Rudolf Ewald Mehmel
On Saturday, December 14th our Dad passed away after living 95 full and rich years as a father, husband, teacher, athlete, lifeguard and scholar.
Dad was born in Winnipeg on April 15th, 1918 in the family home. He grew up in Elmwood chasing the ice truck for stray bits of ice in the summer and in winter horse drawn delivery carts to collect “road apples” for hockey. During the war Dad served as a corporal in the Cdn Armed Forces. In 1944 Dad met mom on the grounds of the Concordia hospital where she worked. Dad said it was love at first sight and they were married for 69 years. Dad was a great believer in Education. He received Certificates in Business Admin and Teaching, his BEd and BSc. After retirement he minored in French, and majored in German to earn his BA. Dad’s happiest times were spent outdoors and in the pursuit of physical fitness swimming, skating, running, walking, x-country skiing, snowshoeing, and canoeing. At age 81 he skied 1000K and he even donned skies last Christmas at 94.
Dad is predeceased by his wife Adelina, daughter Carol, and brothers Herman, and Vincent and sister Elsie. He is survived by his sisters Emma and Helen, and children Linda Burdett, Connie (Mark Koenker), Richard (Donna), Ron, Allan (Kerstin), Corinne (Dorlan Oxelgren) and Angela (Rob Stangl), as well as grandchildren Laura (Grant Kupfer), Jeremy, Kristin (Dominique Grimard), Colin, Brian, Jeff, Tarra (Richard Little), Jessica (Jeff Clemente), Atom, Kohl and M and great-grandchildren Brandon, Dixie, Austin, Jordan, Amariah, Laya, Kaitlyn, Peyton, Darcy, and Jersey Lee and two great-great-grandchildren.

The family is grateful to the care given by Dr. Kroeker and Fred Douglas Lodge.

In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations may be made to the Salvation Army, 290 Vaughan Street, Wpg, MB, R3B 2N8.
