Suzanna “Lai Goon” Dong, peacefully passed away on January 16, 2021 at the age of 81. She had been a long-time resident at the Bethania Personal Care Home.

Suzanna is survived by her children Erasmus in Squamish, BC, Himalaya (Doris), and Melinda (Jonathan); and granddaughters Carrington, Callista, and Chloe Moon of Winnipeg. Her husband Bill had predeceased her in 2018. She is also survived by numerous siblings and family.

Suzanna was born in Canton, China and spent her early years in Hong Kong. When she was a teenager, she made her way to Canada following the immigrant path of her grandfather and father before her. She had made Winnipeg her home ever since. It was at her family restaurant New Canton where she met and married her future husband William lasting over 50 years.

She was very proud of her lifelong career at the Bank of Montreal. She worked at the main branch and won many service awards during her time there.

Mom loved the arts and people. She enjoyed music, piano, writing, singing, and poetry. She enjoyed meeting people, and everyone knew “Suzy”. However, one of her greatest passions was her Christian faith in Jesus.

She enjoyed the church community and the wide range of activities in it. She loved choir, interacting with missionaries, attending conferences, bible reading, and prayer. She was always ready and willing to share her faith. The faith she had saw her through cancer and a severe stroke that left her physically invalid but never emotionally or spiritually weakened.

As in person gatherings are not possible in these pandemic times, the celebration of life service will be broadcast over the internet on Tuesday, January 26, 2021 at 13:00 Central time. Please visit Suzanna’s obituary page at for the webcast details. In the future when it is safe to do so, there will be a banquet celebration.

We give thanks to the Bethania Care Home for caring for mother during the final years of her life. As such, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in honour of Suzanna Dong to the Bethania Mennonite Personal Care Home Memorial Foundation.

Rest in the Lord and have fun dancing with your “Honey Bill” mom.

Dear Erasmus, Himalaya, Melinda,

We are so sorry for your loss. When I reminiscence about all the times our families got together, I think of how vivacious Aunty Suzanna was to be around, she had such great energy and made everyone around her happy. From the first moment Tarina met your Mom she appreciated her instantly! We have nothing but positive thoughts of your Mom, she was always warm, welcoming, and fun to be around, so many great memories. She will be truly missed.

To Raz, Himalaya, and Melinda,

My relationship with your mother and your family has been a long one and I was very saddened to hear of your mom’s passing. I will always remember our family visits to your home (and your grandfather’s restaurant) to share meals together. Those simple moments of food and laughter are always the warmest memories in my heart.

Of course there were the activities at the Chinese United Church. Your mother provided faithful and consistent leadership for many years. Her level of service laid the foundation for building up the body of Christ at church.

And of course, the one very small role I played that forever links me to your mom and dad. That being the “Ring Boy” at your parent’s wedding. At the time, I was too young to remember any details, but your mom and my mom brought it up often when we were together, and I have the picture to bring that memory to life.

I will always remember your mom’s genuine interest in my life and well-being and her friendly and happy smile for me. She was a great encouragement to me and to those who knew her.
